College of Science and Engineering is one of the colleges at Jinan University which is a comprehensive one with a history of nearly 100 years. The origin of the college can be traced to the year of 1929, when it was called College of Science at National Jinan University. As time went by, the university saw lots of changes. In 1978 Jinan University was reestablished and Science and Engineering College was created in Feb 1985. The college now consists of five departments with seven first-class disciplines: physics, environmental engineering, food science and engineering, materials science and engineering department; four research institutes: applied mechanics, environmental engineering, photo-electronic engineering, electronic power and electronic research institute; and one research centre: food science and technology. There are two administrative offices: Party and Administrative Office, and Teaching and Research Office. Liu Renhuai, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, acts as director of applied mechanics research institute, and Chen Xingdan, academician of Chinese Academy of Science, honorary dean of Science and Engineering College.
 
The college currently has over 165 faculty and staff, among whom one is academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, one academician of Chinese Academy of Science, 74 associate professors and full professors, and 54 lecturers. Sixty-three of the teachers hold doctorate degrees, some of whom come back from overseas and are playing an important role in teaching and research.
At present the college possesses a number of teaching and research laboratories, the total value of fixed assets being 14,560,000 yuan. Moreover the university will devote more efforts to the lab construction input. Up to now six lab centers have been approved and initiated. Now there are Mong Manwai Science and Engineering Building and Civil Engineering Laboratory Building for teaching and research. The second Science and Engineering Building will be set up soon.
 
The college has two PhD programs: engineering mechanics and biomedical engineering; nine master's programs: condensed physics, optics, optics engineering, engineering mechanics, structure engineering, food science, environmental science, environmental engineering and materials science. There are over 70 full time graduate students.
 
The college offers nine programs for bachelor degrees: applied physics, information engineering, civil engineering, engineering mechanics, environmental science, environmental engineering, food science and engineering, food quality and security, and materials science and engineering. There are over 800 undergraduates and one sixth of them come from overseas.
 
The main research fields of the college are: nonlinear theory of plate, structure mechanics of compound materials, nonlinear study of sensor springs, random nonlinear vibration theory and numerical method, wavelet random finite element, soil mechanics and foundation engineering, constitutive analysis of viscoplastic materials, structural reliability study, high-performance concrete and nanometer materials applied in building materials, theory and design of long-span bridge, diffraction and propagation of elastic waves, technology and application of near-infrared spectrum, near-infrared spectrum quick detection of honey, fiber optical and information technology, fiber optical sensors technology, fiber optical and raster technology, fiber optical device and micro optical integration technology, photoelectron information technology, photo-electric detection technology and apparatus, photo-electric detection and imaging device, nanometer material, photoelectron materials and apparatus, functional film materials and sensor technique, biological fiber optical sensors, biomedical information processing and system, biological photoelectric detection technique, clinical photoelectron information technique, computational physic analog and engineering computing, theoretical physics, biological treatment of wastewater, biological treatment of heavy metal-contained wastewater, study of water treatment reagent, wastewater treatment and water quality programming, environmental impact and assessments, treatment and reclamation of solid waste, preparation and application of food additives, research and development of functional food, food packaging research, deep processing of cereals and oil products, deep processing of fruit and vegetable products, biological materials and structure engineering, functional materials, clinical metal matrix composite materials, inorganic/organic hybrid materials, etc. In recent years the college has done 97 research projects with the total amount of fund being 12,606,000 yuan, which are sponsored by national, provincial and ministerial, municipal departments or by enterprises.
